American Airlines said Monday that 80% of its revenue this year will come from loyalty program members and passengers in premium cabins like business class, up from 70% in 2017. American and other carriers have poured billions of dollars into new cabins, lounges and onboard upgrades to cater to high-spending travelers. American's rival Delta Air Lines has repeatedly said that premium revenue growth has become a bigger share of its overall sales and is growing faster than ticket sales in the coach cabin. American earlier on Monday said it was ordering 260 new Boeing , Airbus and Embraer planes to revamp its fleet and that it would retrofit older Airbus planes to increase the size of their first-class cabins. Analysts polled by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv are projecting 2024 earnings per share of $2.56 and revenue of $54.97 billion.

AdvertisementHowever, passengers will still have their physical ID checked afterward at O'Hare because it's testing the feature for security checkpoints and bag dropoff, per TPG. Advertisement"We plan to add TSA PreCheck Touchless ID to more bag drop counters, security checkpoints, and boarding gates in the future," it adds. Its passengers at Atlanta, Detroit, LAX, LaGuardia, and JFK can check bags and go through security without needing to show a physical ID.

The head of the FAA told Congress how its panel is examining sleep science to help. Despite the best efforts of pilots and air traffic controllers, sometimes collisions do happen. It said the captain was distracted and confused by instructions from air traffic controllers, while the co-pilot lost track of the plane's location. Air traffic control fatigueOne major cause of near-misses is the strained workload of air traffic controllers. "Air traffic controllers are being required to do mandatory overtime," she said.

A Lyft sign is seen in the pick-up area at JFK Airport in New York City on April 28, 2023. Lyft shares were 16% higher in premarket trade on Wednesday, retaining some gains after the company said it made a major error in a press release reporting its latest results, but still outperformed analyst estimates. A release initially said the company was forecasting a 500 basis point, or 5%, expansion of its adjusted earnings margin for 2024. Lyft stock initially shot up more than 60% higher in extended trade after the report, before cooling significantly on the correction. The company's full-year adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) swung from a $416.5 million loss to a $222.4 profit.

Delta Air Lines ' popular airport lounges are getting a more exclusive tier, in the airline's latest push to cater to high-spending travelers. The first "premium" lounge is scheduled to open in June at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and at 38,000 square feet, it will be the largest of the carrier's lounges, Delta said on Thursday. Other high-end Delta lounges will open in Boston and Los Angeles later this year. The new strategy shows Delta moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach for its airport travelers. The airline is joining United Airlines , which operates Polaris lounges, and American Airlines ' which has Flagship lounges, along with standard airport clubs.

The pilots of the London-bound American Airlines Boeing 777 took a wrong turn on a taxiway alongside two perpendicular runways. Instead, they crossed 4L just as a Delta Boeing 737 began its takeoff roll down the same runway. A controller warned the American crew about a “possible pilot deviation," and gave them a phone number to call, which the captain did. The cockpit voice recording from inside the American plane was taped over during the six-hour flight to London and lost forever. Investigators said they tried several times to interview the American pilots, but the pilots refused on advice of their union, which objected to the NTSB recording the interviews.

Flight100, Virgin Atlantic's world first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) transatlantic flight by a commercial airline is fuelled ahead of its take off from London Heathrow to New York JFK on Tuesday 28 November 2023. LONDON — The first trans-Atlantic flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel departed London for New York on Tuesday as the industry seeks to prove the viability of greener air travel. Sustainable aviation fuel — also known as SAF — is an umbrella term for non-fossil-derived fuels, including biofuels derived from plant or animal materials, municipal waste and agricultural residues. It still produces emissions, but proponents argue the overall "lifecycle emissions" from the fuel are significantly lower than from regular petroleum-based fuel. There are relatively few SAF production plants or companies transporting it globally, with incentives for producers hampered by low margins.

CNN —For the first time, a transatlantic flight operated by a commercial airline will be powered by 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) — a type of plane fuel that bears the promise of a much lower climate impact than traditional ones. The flight is the latest in a series of recent tests involving 100% SAF. Days earlier, business jet maker Gulfstream completed what it billed as the world’s first transatlantic flight using 100% SAF. Large twin-engine jets have performed flights using 100% SAF on both engines before, but these flights involved military aircraft. “One flight on 100% alternative fuel isn’t going to change the fact that 99.9% of aviation fuel is fossil fuel and there’s no great option for feedstock (raw materials) that can be scaled up sustainably,” she says.

Virgin Atlantic is operating the first transatlantic flight on a commercial airliner powered by 100% SAF. But it costs more than double conventional jet fuel, and production is lagging behind demand. Virgin Atlantic is operating the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to New York's JFK Airport, where it's expected to arrive around 2 p.m. "And if we didn't prove it can be done, you would never, ever get sustainable aviation fuel."
